Des Moines is working on the periodic review and update to its Comprehensive Plan. A full periodic review is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to revisit our community vision. As a Des Moines resident, your input is crucial to the success of this plan as it will shape our goals for years to come. We are working on a public participation plan and will update this website with engagement opportunities.
We conduct community engagement according to the requirements and timelines set forth in the Growth Management Act and RCW 36.70A.130.
We seek to act collaboratively and work with our community and countywide agencies as well as our local Tribes.
Staff is currently taking draft elements to City Council committees for review and feedback, before presenting the entirety of the Comprehensive Plan to City Council for adoption at the end of 2024. Information on specific committee meetings, including agendas, draft elements, and copies of the presentations by staff can be found in the links below.
The survey was open from July 27 to December 4, 2023, with 482 responses recorded, more than doubling the survey responses from the last Comprehensive Plan update survey. The survey was promoted online via social media and in-person at the Farmers Market and National Night Out. Questions in the survey sought to identify community priority areas to address in the update.
Survey results identified priority areas respondents would like to see more of, including increased neighborhood commercial uses, community facilities, and general commercial uses. Respondents also expressed a desire to focus on equity, outreach, and representation of all community members. This graphic illustrates the top five topics respondents felt were important for the city to address, listed in priority:
